Kitchen Design of
The Year 2006
and Regional Winner Auckland
Designer: Shane George CKDNZ
Company: Shane George Design, Kohimarama, Auckland
Email: georgedesign@clear.net.nz
Judges Comments:
"Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous." A functional
kitchen in harmony with other areas of the home. Its aesthetically
wonderful design features spatial symmetry and sleek lines. Good
use of materials and contrasting colours. Expansive kitchen lends
itself well with the majestic views that offer a great night ambience.
Note the recessed glass doors and clever use of unobtrusive pantry
sliding doors.
Bathroom Design of The Year 2006
and Best Renovation Bathroom
Designer: Lydia Geerlings
of Ingrid Geldof Design, Christchurch
Judges Comments: The glass shower gives the impression of spaciousness and transparency, while the use of marble against wood suggests luxury. The recurrent theme of timber beside the mirror and vanity unit (a fantastic piece of furniture) frames the room. Great practical use of marble shelves which disguise the plumbing. The designer has created a space in which to linger.
Runner Up Kitchen Design
of The Year 2006
and Best Renovation Kitchen
and Regional Winner Taranaki
Designer: Glen Johns CKDNZ
of Glen Johns Design, New Plymouth
Judges Comments: Great lines and strong horizontal componentry with pleasing details, like aluminium handles. Good contrast of light and dark, and there is a great furniture feel to the cabinetry. Artistic but discreet use of lighting. An initially simple appearance but stunningly detailed kitchen upon closer inspection.
Runner Up Bathroom Design
of The Year 2006
Designer: Fiona Sutherland
of Bathroom Creations, Te Puke
Judges Comments: An excellent well interpreted design brief: no glass to clean and overall an easy to maintain area. The bathroom was transformed by clever use of a confined room to give it a stark illusion of space. Recessing the bath into a bay niche is a nice feature. Good storage allowance.
Best Kitchen Under $15,000
and Regional Winner Bay of Plenty
Designer: Nathan James
of Design
101, Tauranga
Judges Comments: Exceedingly great value kitchen in a small apartment achieving freshness with the use of colour and slim look stainless. Not using handles at the back of the cabinets carries through the negative detail of the stone walls. Nice consistency of colours throughout the apartment. Unobtrusive positioning of the cooking centre.
Best Laundry/Utility Room Design
Designer: John Gaynor
of Indesign, Christchurch
Judges Comments: Very often the laundry area is an afterthought when building or renovating homes. This particular design however is great in keeping with the rest of the house. The light colours used accentuate its space and it is obvious how successfully functional the design has turned out.
Regional Winner Wellington
Designer: Damian Hannah
of German Kitchens, Wellington
Judges Comments: This is a kitchen with a monochromatic palette that does not distract from the wonderful view. Space is created and accentuated by the illusion of an island floating off into the ocean outside. Specific design challenges were overcome and requirements met in this stunning kitchen.
Regional Winner South Island
Designer: Lydia Geerlings
of Ingrid Geldof Design, Christchurch
Judges Comments: This is a great example of design achieving the clients' brief and resulting in class without compromise, featuring warm and rich textural elements. Lowered cupboards enhance sense of space. Clever use of timber and matching of finishes.

Judges Comments: The judges were impressed by the clever layout, creating a spacious seating area, wider walkways and concise work triangle. The plans, specifications and portfolio were presented with incredible attention to detail.

Judges Comments: A clever conversion of a difficult space is the winning key to client brief, and brings the natural setting indoors. Benchtops with contrasting timber edges offers a new look. Cooking on the island is an entertainers' dream!
