This course is specially designed for anyone starting out in the kitchen industry.
Students learn about kitchen cabinets (materials, structure and installation), basic building construction and details about kitchen appliances. Communication and customer service skills are refined and students learn how to take and interpret a brief. Basic space planning is applied to practical examples and students quickly learn to solve kitchen design challenges and draw concept plans. After completing the week-long block course, students have one year to complete four assignments to the required standard before receiving their Certificate.

This course is ideal for anyone wishing to develop or extend their kitchen design skills.
It explores the impact that building construction, mechanical systems and cabinet manufacture have on kitchen design and installation. Students brush up on customer service and taking a brief, and also gather information on materials and appliances. Specific space planning and ergonomic guidelines are applied to various examples so students can practise creating and presenting the best solutions to a client.

The first block course concentrates on colour, the elements and principles of design as well as styles and themes and how these can be developed. Construction requirements, surface materials, lighting and technology are explored with specific reference to a kitchen designed for a client with special needs. Design requirements of a commercial kitchen, one in a multi level dwelling and a laundry are also considered. Students learn and practise drawing detailed plans to ensure clear communication to the production team.
The second block course focuses on project management and business skills, including marketing and how these can be used effectively in a kitchen design business.

Students learn about bathroom fixtures, fittings and accessories, basic house construction and the essential plumbing requirements to make it all function. Communication and customer service skills are refined and students learn how to take and interpret a brief. Knowledge on space planning is applied to practical examples and students quickly learn to solve bathroom design challenges and draw concept plans. Health and safety in the workplace is covered by distance learning.

This qualification is perfect for experienced designers working in the bathroom sector who have achieved their intermediate qualification. During the first five day block course, students analyse colour and elements of design in various styles and themes and learn how to apply these alongside the principles of design. Specific design requirements for bathrooms in multi level units, special needs and commercial situations are investigated. Specific examples allow students to produce and present developed designs and specifications.
The second block course focuses on project management and business skills, including marketing and how these can be used effectively in any bathroom business.
There are two assignments associated with each of the block courses.

Final course pricing will be available early-mid 2011 after NZQA completes an evalutation of these revised courses. All prospective and enrolled students will be advised.
All fees shown are an indication only and may be less for students who have already completed the same units on other NZQA courses or for employers who have other trainees enrolled with JITO or if current reference books have previously been purchased.
The fees listed already include the government subsidy which is available to anyone working in the industry. An additional fee of approximately $460 is charged for the introductory courses to students not working within the industry, because the Government training subsidy does not apply.
Fees are split between the employer and the student with approx $300 being invoiced to the employer. GST (15%) is included. * All fees are to be confirmed
Payments of fees can be made as one payment or with smaller regular instalments by credit.
Travel and accommodation subsidies are available to all students travelling more than 50km, one way, to attend a block course.
