Happy New Year to everyone, unbelievable to think we are a month gone already for 2016!
We hope you had a wonderful Christmas and holiday with friends and family.
The Executive are very excited about all that 2016 will bring for our members, we have fantastic opportunities including a new look NKBA Awards program – 2016 Excellence in Design.
The 2016 Conference program is promising to be sensational with an international speaker who will be announced in the coming weeks, you won’t want to miss it!
The change of location for Conference this year was made for several reasons. The information we received from your survey responses enabled us to listen and act. Where NZ regional areas are great to visit the reality of the cost to travel to these centres can be more expensive therefore potentially prohibitive for some of you to join.
We want to have as many of you included at Conference, it is a fantastic opportunity to gain knowledge, network and have fun with your industry colleagues. With the change to Auckland, will mean cheaper flights for those out of Auckland and for locals we hope you consider staying with Conference at the designated hotel. Options are being considered at present and we will negotiate the best rates possible to link with location for our program activities. It has been many years since we have had Conference in Auckland, home to our biggest Chapter, we look forward to you hosting us and highlighting your fair city! More on this soon…
The 2016 Excellence in Design Awards communication will commence in the next few weeks. There will be changes to categories, including reinstatement of Chapter recognition awards and exciting new opportunities. The NKBA Executive are working closely with Davy & Chapman to bring a fresh approach to our awards and we are confident you will be impressed.
The 2016 dates have been set for the National Certificate in Kitchen Design and the National Diploma in Kitchen Design. These are NKBA run in conjunction with BCITO. Please see details in the newsletter or further information on the NKBA website. If you have any questions please contact Suzie. We have two recent graduates of the National Certificate in Kitchen Design, Jill Tillick and Eugen Grab - Congratulations!
There are currently 50 students studying kitchen design and with the skills shortage we are experiencing in our industry this is severely under what is required. Statistics show the growth is expected to continue to climb in the Auckland market. The Christchurch residential housing market has plateaued post-earthquake however Canterbury is now seeing the high end rebuilds beginning. The consequences of this are that designers are having to wait for months for manufacturing. Manufacturers and designers please consider educating your staff, we need qualified designers within our industry.
We look forward to announcing information on Conference and Awards soon so keep an eye on your emails and be sure to contact Suzie or Donna if we can be of assistance.
We’re very excited to announce the introduction of the NEW NKBA Excellence In Design Awards, our new look program for 2016 and beyond.
This year’s awards will see the evolution of our well-established program, including the addition of some exciting new awards categories.
For our annual Conference, in Auckland this August, we are lucky enough to have secured a very well known international speaker. All we can say at this stage is that they’re somewhat of a legend in the international design world.
Details on how to you can enter the Excellence In Design Awards, the conference venue, other activities, PLUS the
announcement of our guest speaker, will be coming directly to you over the coming weeks and months.
These changes have been developed in proud partnership with our sponsors and we look forward to bringing you more information very soon.

Laminex New Zealand is pleased to announce the appointment of Rob Jackson as National Marketing Manager. Rob comes to the position with a wealth of experience, most recently the responsibility for the Melteca, Laminam and Laminex Timber Veneer product ranges in his role as Marketing Development Manager – Commercial. Rob began with Laminex New Zealand in February 2006 managing Caesarstone, Corian and Formica Flooring. Rob then spent time at Carters before taking on the role of Field Sales and Marketing Manager at Stanley Black and Decker where he led a team of six people, before returning to Laminex New Zealand in early 2015.
Damian Hannah from German Kitchens has just returned from his trip to KBIS in Las Vegas, sponsored by Laminex New Zealand, which he won by entering the NKBA awards in 2015. KBIS is North America’s ultimate exhibition held in conjunction with the National Association of Home Builder’s Show.
Here’s Damian’s feedback on what he saw:
“There were some amazing innovations and exciting products this year and here are a few observations that essentially will change the direction of the industry:
- Electrolux SmartBoost washing machine technology, premixing the water and detergent in a washing machine, essentially making a cold-water wash as effective as washing clothes in hot.
- The DXV by American Standard 3D printed bathroom mixer (also known as additive laser sintering), making it look like the water magically appears from nowhere – completely reinventing how water is moved through the twisted shapes.
- Black Tapware, There has been an increasing demand recently for black tapware here in NZ, yet there are few suppliers and even fewer styles. It was pleasing to see that most tapware fabricators had a selection of black tapware. I expect this to gain a lot more traction now there are more options for the end consumer!

- Formica Realism, I have witnessed the emergence of more realism from countertop manufacturers with regards to replicating marble, stone and wood to the point that it’s getting harder to tell the difference. The depth and texture these manufacturers are getting in their countertops is getting better and better and will soon be harder to separate. I witnessed a ‘beam wood’ laminate from Formica that looked real!
- The recent trend in healthy cooking has really come to the fore with domestic steam cooking appliances. This year Gaggenau have released their sous vide cooking steam oven reinforcing this trend. I see this being quite popular over the next few years to further enhance the benefits of steam cooking.”
Congratulations once again to Damian for winning the trip and thanks for sharing the experience with us.

The mechanical ‘touch to open’ support system combined with soft close now available in New Zealand.
Handle-less designs now have more motion technology options available to them than ever before. With the introduction of SERVO-DRIVE flex for handle-less, fully integrated appliances and now, the mechanical opening system, TIP-ON BLUMOTION for LEGRABOX and MOVENTO - the recipient of 5 international design and innovation awards, is now available in New Zealand.
These days, handle-less furniture is a must in many living areas – from kitchens to living rooms to bathrooms. Which isn’t surprising, as furniture fronts without handles have a smooth and uninterrupted look. Large, wide fronts and straight-cut designs, unspoilt by handles all assist in the portrayal of modern design.
TIP-ON BLUMOTION is a mechanical solution combining two functions in one fitting: easy one-touch opening (TIPON) and soft and effortless closing (BLUMOTION).
The new and inspiring quality of motion of TIP-ON BLUMOTION is not only available for LEGRABOX, the elegant box system by Blum, but also MOVENTO, Blum’s runner system for handle-less wooden pull-outs and drawers. TIP-ON BLUMOTION can be assembled quickly and simply without tools. Even mitred and rebated applications can be implemented with ease.
“By combining two tried and tested motion technologies in a single runner system, we’ve greatly enhanced the ease of use of kitchen and living room furniture,” say Blum’s specialists. “We now offer a single mechanical solution for easy one-touch opening and soft and effortless closing. TIP-ON BLUMOTION delivers a feather-light glide and harmonious motion for enhanced user

The paint is nearly dry on Resene’s latest colour collection – the Resene Multi-finish collection. This is the heart of the Resene Total Colour System, encompassing 896 colours ranging the gamut of the rainbow, presented on a series of 64 palettes.
The collection brings together the most popular Multi-finish colours, together with favourites from many of The Range fashion colour fandecks and a selection of new colour strengths. It’s a best of the best Resene colour collection and is designed to work alongside the existing Resene whites and neutrals collection.
Moving from the existing three chip wide palettes to the two chip wide version, all colour chips run flush to the edge of the page, which makes it easy to compare colours to each other or other swatches or samples. On the back of each palette is colour information including recommended complementary colours. Each chip is finished in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen, the exact same low sheen waterborne enamel you can use on your walls. While most paint suppliers use printer inks on their colour charts, we use Resene paint tinted with Resene VOC Free tinters which gives a more accurate colour. After all, nothing looks more like paint than the actual paint does!
