I have recently returned from nearly three weeks away in Europe and it was straight back to work the next day - so no rest for the wicked! My trip included two and a half days at EuroCucina, plus two tours generously hosted by Blum and Cosentino. It was a first for me and I had an incredible time. Even though this was a personally funded trip it was 100% worth it with the friendships I developed within our industry and the knowledge I gained of the latest products and trends. If you’ve never been, start saving for 2018! Check out the NKBA Facebook page (and give us a like while you’re there) for some snaps of EuroCucina.
Since my return Donna has finalised the 2016 Excellence in Design Awards entry platform - hosted completely on the NKBA website. The Board, Judges, Davy & Chapman, Donna and I have worked hard to bring you a fresh new look for the 2016 Awards with new categories and conditions. Please check these carefully and if you have any questions please contact the email as noted. We are super excited to see your entries come through, note the entries close 5pm on Sunday 19 June.
Our judges; Robin Caudwell, Mal Corboy, Milvia Hannah, Alice Lines; Editor of homestyle magazine and Ultimate Use of Colour judge; Nikki Morris, bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the panel. Your entries are in excellent hands!
Following survey results, the 2016 Conference is to be held in Auckland on 12 & 13 August, lock these dates into your diary now. We are in the process of negotiating accommodation rates and will advise you as soon as possible so you can book early.
The August Conference program and registration will be announced in the next couple of weeks. Watch this space for an exciting announcement on our international guest speaker – proudly brought to you by NKBA and Platinum sponsor Fisher & Paykel.
Many of you have made enquiries about an updated contract which includes new legislation. This will soon be available on the NKBA website under the Member area. If you have forgotten your login drop us a line.
Designers, all the best with your 2016 entries and don’t forget to acknowledge your manufacturer, suppliers and products so that we can join together and strengthen this exciting industry we belong to.
Another exciting addition to this year’s 2016 Excellence in Design Awards program is our exclusive media partnership with homestyle magazine.
We looked for a like-minded publishing partner to work closely with us as we evolved the awards format. So, as a perennial favourite of our members and the wider design community - homestyle seemed the perfect fit. Reaching an audience crucial to the growth of the NKBA brand and the advocacy of our members, homestyle offers us a number of channels for communicating our story, including print and online.
Over 2016, homestyle and NKBA will be working together to provide greater exposure for the organisation, its members and the awards.

In March, Fisher & Paykel opened the doors on their first Australasian-based Fisher & Paykel Experience Centre in Sydney, designed to inspire and empower customers, designers, architects and specifiers during the research and planning phase of their kitchen design journey. A step away from the traditional retail showroom, the highly curated space displays a key selection of Fisher & Paykel and DCS Grill Outdoor products as they would appear in the home, supported by interactive technology that provides additional product information to give customers a hands-on, educational experience.
The purpose of the Experience Centre is not to replace the retail environment, but to complement it by simplifying the design process so the customer can easily create a wish list to take on to a specifier or retail store. Fisher & Paykel has also opened a new-look Experience Centre in New York to cater for the brand’s growing North American market and is in
the process of progressively rolling out elements of the Experience Centre design and digital technology to New Zealand retail environment, with the first examples now in place in Auckland locations with more locations to follow soon.
Following the 2014 expansion of its Supernatural range, Laminex New Zealand is delighted to announce its March introduction of three stunning new designs.
The hero of this collection is Statuario Nuvo™, Caesarstone’s new interpretation of natural Statuario marble. It brings refined yet impressive dark veins on a white background, enriched with a delicately diffused subsurface vein structure, made using Caesarstone’s proprietary technology. As a more subtle complement to the highly successful Calacatta Nuvo in Caesarstone’s new Supernatural Ultra range, the elegant vein structure of Statuario Nuvo is perfectly on trend and is the ideal choice for elegant, understated interiors.
The other two additions speak directly to the design movement of natural materials with a modern industrial feel, exposed surfaces and grey tones. Raw Concrete and Fresh Concrete will be available in Caesarstone’s new concrete finish. The concrete finish adds an industrial aged patina and feel to the surface enhancing the authentic look and yet will never require sealing. Raw Concrete is a natural soft grey colour delivering the classic industrial concrete look whilst Fresh Concrete offers the delicate and clean modern industrial appearance of fine white concrete. In addition to the existing Sleek Concrete, the range covers all bases for lovers of the concrete look.
“We are very excited to be introducing these new designs which are offering alternatives to natural materials that are undoubtedly in demand, achieving the look and feel of the natural material, but with all the functional quartz surface benefits of stain, scratch and heat resistance.” says
Teresa Walsh, Laminex New Zealand’s Marketing Development Manager, Residential.
“We see these inspired designs being used in both residential and commercial interiors across a wide range of applications including kitchen benchtops, splash backs, bathroom vanities and wall lining,” Teresa continues.
In addition to its proven and trusted quality, every slab of Caesarstone comes with a 10 Year Limited Warranty, backed with national after sales service provided by Laminex New Zealand.
The new designs are now available through the national network of Caesarstone fabricators. To find out more please visit www.caesarstone.co.nz

Minimalist kitchens and furniture with handle-less fronts have remained a strong design trend in 2016 and after reviewing the latest offerings at EuroCucina from the biggest design studios in the world - clean, unobstructed cabinet fronts with everything and anything integrated and concealed behind cupboard doors will be a defining feature in kitchen design for the upcoming year and beyond.
3 applications. Thanks to Blum fittings, lift systems, doors and pull-outs can be implemented in various designs to suit the application and users’ needs
Austrian hardware specialist Blum offers 3 applications (lift systems, hinges and pull-outs) and 4 motion technologies (BLUMOTION, TIP-ON, SERVO-DRIVE, and the new TIP-ON BLUMOTION) to produce countless solutions for handle-less furniture. Whether for the traditional cabinet or drawer front or for the handle-less opening of integrated fridges/freezers, bar fridges or integrated wine coolers.
Handle-less kitchens are still very much on-trend. A wide range of fittings solutions by Blum offer tried and tested user convenience
Blum’s TIP-ON mechanical opening support system gives you easy one-touch opening for handle-less overhead lifts, doors and pull-outs. The company’s latest motion technology — TIP-ON BLUMOTION combines the mechanical opening support system with tried and tested soft-close BLUMOTION. For supreme user ease opt for SERVO-DRIVE, the electric motion support system. Thanks to SERVO-DRIVE, lift systems open at a single touch and close again at the press of a switch. The system brings the same user convenience to handle-less drawers and pull-outs. What is unique is that Blum now also offers the electric motion support system for one-off applications. For example, the company has a new SERVO-DRIVE solution for fridge/freezers and other integrated appliances, and the electric motion support system can also be used for singular lift systems, rubbish bin pull-outs or any other units in frequent use. In other words, opening ease for handle-less fronts throughout the kitchen, regardless of budget!
The beautiful TR4110 Victoria cooker was awarded as “Red Dot: Best of the Best” for top design quality and ground-breaking design.
The cooker’s classic aesthetic perfectly captures the essence of timelessness, characterized by attention to details and a love for warm and familiar
atmospheres. Details such as the Smeg 50’s style logo and striking chrome knobs enhance the distinctive style that makes every Smeg product unique.
Smeg small appliances also received their fair share of spotlight, as the 50’s style blender was awarded the “Red Dot for high quality design”.
The small household appliance, in itself an object evocative of healthy daily habits, uses visual references to a not too distant past - the 1950s - to assert its modernity, combining latest generation technology and aesthetic sensibility. Its lines and colours, from candy-like brights to romantic pastels, are not capricious details, but a strong point of the design by Smeg and by Matteo Bazzicalupo and Raffaella Mangiarotti of deepdesign©. It is the second consecutive time a 50’s style small appliance wins a Red Dot Design Award (after the Smeg toaster in 2015).
The Red Dot Awards jury is made up of professional design experts from different countries and backgrounds, which ensures an extended evaluation of the intercultural aspects connected with the winning design projects – an approach particularly close to the Smeg philosophy.
ACC has decided in its collective wisdom that most Kitchen and Bathroom manufacturers are on the wrong Business Industry Classification.
ACC are in the process of changing your classifications from 29210 (Wooden furniture and upholstered seat manufacturing) at a levy rate of 0.84c per $100 to 23230 (Wooden structural fittings and components manufacturing) at $1.30 per $100.
This is an increase of 54% on your ACC levies, and they are backdating the changes for one year. Even worse news is that from Monday 4th April, the levy rate has been increased from $1.30 to $1.76 per $100.
This means that many businesses will be facing a levy increase in excess of 100%. You may have already had the letter from ACC, if so – I can help you! Contact me
ASAP for a chat about ways that you can reduce your ACC costs. My investigations have uncovered over 20 ways that business owners can legitimately and significantly save money.
If you have not yet received the letter, keep my details on hand so that if and when this happens to you, you can contact me for help in reducing your ACC burden. If you have had the bad news OR you want to find ways to reduce your ACC costs, please contact me so that we can work together to minimise the effects of this huge cost increase!
